Keeping Your Children Warm this Winter

Keeping Your Children Warm this Winter
A guest post from Galt Toys

While it is proven that we cannot catch a cold from being cold, getting too cold is unpleasant and means our body has to fight harder to keep itself functioning normally, and so we may be more susceptible to catching viruses such as the common cold, flu or something worse. Children have weaker immune systems than adults, and we parents know how important it is to keep them snuggly warm. In this post, Galt Toys offers some great tips for keeping your child this winter!

Out and About
For babies, prams offer a large amount of protection from the elements, but warm layered clothing, blankets and a rain cover are essential for keeping them snug and protecting from cold winds and rain. Snowsuits are fabulous, but keep an eye to make sure your child doesn’t get too warm, and remove or undo it if going indoors.

Toddlers who are finding their feet or who are becoming increasingly confident on their feet should have warm sturdy footwear, or wellies with thick socks to protect their little tootsies. Vests, t-shirts, hoodies, coats and snowsuits are essential (although not all at once) and can be layered accordingly.

Older children need a warm outer coat, and perhaps thermal underwear for the coldest days. All children should also have a hat, as most heat escapes from the top of their head, as well as gloves and a scarf if necessary.

Around the house
While we are all conscious to keep our homes warm, it is important to keep a child’s bedroom warm. Stay away from portable heaters and electric blankets where possible, as these can be dangerous to younger children (although less dangerous to teenagers as long as electric blankets are turned off!).

Instead, add extra sheets or a warmer quilt and lined curtains to keep the heat in that is already there. Warm pyjamas with long legs and sleeves are your best bet, and bed socks may be necessary if you have a child prone to discarding bedding during the night. Babies might benefit from a sleeping bag to prevent them losing their covers and becoming cold.

Attend to other cold problems around the house, such as draughts and cold windows by using excluders or heavy curtains. A door curtain for the front door may be useful in older properties or those without double glazing.

Bedtime routine
If your child is a little older, warm broths, hot meals and hot drinks at bedtime are excellent ways to warm your child from the inside. Look for healthy recipes online for some inspiration. A warm bath before climbing into warm pyjamas will also help them to get all snuggly ready for bed.

A warm child will be healthier, happier, and may even sleep better! Do you have any fab tips on keeping your child warm this winter?

First Time Child Care - Help?!

I feel I need to blog this out.

A couple of days ago, I posted the below message on the Let's Talk forum at Give Mums A Break:

Hello Ladies,

I am starting to look at childcare for my 15 month old. Daddy works shifts, so I'm with her all the time, barring an odd few nights when she stays with her grandma (my friend). I have no family to call on. As I suffer from depression and am trying to complete my degree online with the O.U. I need a break. Does that sound awful? I find that by the time Little Lady goes to bed the last thing I want to do is study.

So my questions are:
What type of childcare do I choose?
Did you find any benefits to child minder or nursery?
How did you find your childcare, assuming you use it?
What questions should I be asking?
Any other hints and tips?
Am I being selfish?
Tips for overcoming guilt?

Thanks Ladies
Nikki x

I received some helpful responses.

As part of this week's Reasons to be Cheerful, I mentioned I have an appointment with a child minder this evening, filled with trepidation, questions, and guilt, but that's because I am a good mother, right?!

So after going to meet her, tonight I added:
I just met with a child minder. She seems like a lovely, down to earth lady, Ofsted regulated, etc. She has a daughter just starting nursery and  a few other children she looks after.

Kiki liked her, immediately put arms out for a cuddle.

We spent about an hour and half with her, a lot of that was with her playing with Little Lady and telling us the routine etc.

So driving home I ask Daddy what he thinks.

Now bearing in my mind:

A) I need a break,

B) I have no time to study, I'm sorry I am not one of those wonder mums who can study when child is in bed. After 9pm and I'm no good for anything but mind numbing TV! Depression makes my concentration and memory shocking. I am going to fail my course at this rate as I haven't started revising, and still have an assignment due next week!

C) He says he will take her out on his days off, he says this every time we have this conversation but it never happens.

Why did I even bother?!

I feel guilty enough and I have told him this. After the post natal depression, he occasionally tells me I'm a good mum.

His response, 'I feel like leaving her with a stranger makes us bad parents!'

I mean FFS! I don't know what to do, I'm nearly in tears.

I really don't know what to do. I need help, I need a break, but I don't know what to do for the best. Am I being a bad mother? I feel like the devil incarnate tonight.
Help?

Reasons to be Cheerful

Hey guys, guess what? My first reason to be cheerful this week is?
I am on time! Woo hoo!

For more information on what Reasons to Be Cheerful (#R2BC) is all about please check out this post from Michelle at Mummy from the Heart for a full description.

OK so on to this week's reasons to be cheerful:
  1.  I have an appointment with a childminder this evening, filled with trepidation, questions, and guilt, but that's because I am a good mother, right?!
  2. I'm excited to be involved in something new, Give Mums a Break, a new venture for mums, started by the lovely Kate. Check it out here: Give Mums A Break
  3. I posted on there about childcare and was given lots of advice and support. Nice people, check it out.
  4. The lovely Kate also helped me this week with some PR information. I love that the blogging community is always willing to help out.
  5. I actually managed to do some crafting this week. I made my friend's birthday card, I think it's cute. What do you think?

  6.  I don't get involved with Wobbles Wednesday, #WobbleWednesday  but thinking I should perhaps as my actual Slimming World weigh in is a Wednesday! lol So this marks my first foray in to Wobbliness, although I've been wobbly for many years :)
  7. And obviously following that reason to be cheerful, I should tell you my major reason this week... At my Slimming World weigh in, I have lost 6lbs this week! Woo hoo! That's 11lbs in 2 weeks. I was also Slimmer of the Week. I know it's still early days, and I am exercising too, but I know the weight loss will slow and I won't get such great results each week, and there is obviously a long way to go, but go me! I'm proud of myself. And that, my friends, doesn't happen often!

So over to you, what do you have to smile about this week.
Oh incidentally on smile, Wendy at Handmade Harbour is now running weekly papercraft link party and giveaways, this week's theme is smile.

Blogging Every Day in August: Best bit of your day (Day 13)

Sarah at Yummy Mummy In Training has set herself a challenge of blogging every day in August and has listed her prompts. As my blogging is a bit hit and miss at the moment, I will be using her prompts to generate some ideas too.

Today's prompt is: Best Bit Of Your Day

This is an easy prompt for me.
When I wake up on a morning and look over at my Little Lady in bed playing with her toys and she catches my eye, smiles and stretches her hand out to me, with a pointed finger, so we can touch fingers.

Oh and that 5 minutes when at the end of the day the kiddo's asleep and I pour a glass of wine...

This glass is from Lucinda Jayne Boutique on Etsy, who ships worldwide.

Play & Fun

I was looking around the internet for play ideas for Little Lady.
She has so many toys that don't get played with, but I wanted something more educational and less reliant on technology (Only so many times you can listen to the Singing Alfie song!).
I pinned quite a few ideas to Pinterest, some of which involved sensory bags and boxes.
Sensory bags or boxes contains items that encourage the child's senses, for example the feel of a product, the sounds it makes, etc.
I was fascinated by the contents some people added:
  • glow water (!)
  • glitter
  • oil
  • hair gel
  • paint
  • shaving foam
  • sand
  • toys
  • buttons
  • shells
  • lentils
  • pasta
  • rice
I like messy play, if it's outside! But these are great, so next trip to £1 shops will see Daddy & Me making these.
This one looks great for older kids too - Giant Squishy Sensory Bag

Have you tried these with your children?
Were they received well?

Blogging Every Day in August: Happiness is... (Day 4)

Sarah at Yummy Mummy In Training has set herself a challenge of blogging every day in August and has listed her prompts. As my blogging is a bit hit and miss at the moment, I will be using her prompts to generate some ideas too.

Today's prompt is: Happiness is...

Happiness is...
  • The smile on my daughter's face, especially when she's being proud of herself or discovering something new.
  • The sound of her laughter, her giggle melts my heart.
  • Music, my daughter loves to dance.
  • Great friendships, I have some wonderful people in my life, and I'm grateful for them.
  • Daddy being a loving husband and a wonderful father.
  • Water, I've always loved water and its great to see Kiki developing her confidence with it too.
  • Trees, I have no idea why I have developed an obsession with them, but they feature highly on my photos.
  • Wine, a glass helps to unwind from the stresses of the day.
  • Pampering, I was pampered recently and loved it. Whilst pregnant I had massages which really helped me unwind.
  • Sleep, insomnia is a sister of the bitch of depression for me, so a good night's sleep is usually (prescription) drug induced, which leaves me feeling zombified the following day.

Blogging Every Day in August: A photo of us (Day 2)

Sarah at Yummy Mummy In Training has set herself a challenge of blogging every day in August and has listed her prompts. As my blogging is a bit hit and miss at the moment, I will be using her prompts to generate some ideas too.

Today's prompt is: A photo of us.

Whilst reading some blogs on Sunday, I saw a post someone had made of professional family photographs, it's something I've been thinking about for a while, so hopefully will get booked soon.

I enjoy taking photo's. I take photo's of Little Lady often, as you can probably tell from the blog!

We usually manage to get some pictures of her with Daddy, even if he does hate photographs!

I have even started to ask him to take pictures of me and Kiki too. As I realised during her 1st year I think we have four pictures of us.

But as I'm usually the one behind the camera, we only have one picture of mummy, daddy, and Little Lady!

That is shocking and we must rectify that!

Proud Mummy

Today, for the very first time, my Little Lady pulled herself up into a standing position.

She has been standing whilst we held her for a while, but this was the first time that she did it by herself.

I'm such a proud mummy!

eBay Birthday Bargains

I have used eBay for lots of things, especially whilst pregnant and since for baby related things. I mean some things are ridiculously expensive and only used for such a short time.

For example, when I was pregnant I bought a load of second hand muslins dirty cheap, OK so they weren't white anymore, but a boil wash and a packet of Flamingo pink machine dye and I had cheap funky muslins. We have had lots of compliments on them too!

I have bought and sold quite a lot of clothes too.

So I often have a look on baby related items, just in case. I wanted a parent handled trike for Little Lady's birthday, I really liked the Smart Trike but it was too expensive for us. I looked on eBay and managed to get a Hello Kitty Trike, a toddler slide, and a bundle of Fisher Price, Toys R' Us, etc. toys from the same buyer for £19!

What a bargain!

Happy Birthday Baby!

Although Kiki's first birthday isn't until tomorrow, daddy is working, so we decided to make the most of the weather and have a barbecue.

The Little Lady was spoiled rotten and has so many new beautiful clothes. In fact they fill half of her wardrobe (and its a full size one, not baby sized!). Some of them are so gorgeous, I admit to being a tad jealous.

I am grateful to our friends that came to make Kiki's first birthday so special xxx

Hexies, Inspiration, and Sewing

Remember on my post about my attempts at baby bib making, I mentioned my stash of Fat Quarters? I managed to use one making two of the bibs and was Googling what else I could do with them, as I knew the bunting was never going to happen.

I discovered Hexies! Or Hexagons if you prefer. They are a basic staple of lots of quilts. I doubt I'd ever have the patience to do it, although I did admit to being totally in awe of those that do. A quilt of Hexies made using outgrown baby clothes does sound quite sweet; but so does selling them to buy next size up, and in the current financial climate, more logical for me.

But I loved the Hexies, I just couldn't stop thinking about them and what I could use them for or make. Honestly blogs are full of quilting p0rn! I found a blog by Angela at My Three Sons and she shows a tutorial for a needle book using Hexies here.

Hmmm a small, maybe manageable task, I wonder...

As I had some of the tattoo inspired print left over, I positioned the Hexie over the print to pick out individual motifs, I think the less challenged sewing linguistics amongst us call it fussy cutting. I'm probably wrong, feel free to let me know!

I made two needle cases, one for me and one I gave to Nanna with the Baby Shoe Pincushion I made here.
